We’re trialling a glyphosate-free grounds maintenance service!

As part of our Biodiversity Plan, we’ve committed to phasing out the use of harmful chemicals for supressing weeds by 2030. From November 2025 we’ll be trailing a more nature friendly way of managing our land, by no longer using glyphosate-based weedkiller.

Glyphosate, which can be found in products such as Roundup, is the most commonly used chemical-weedkiller around the world, including the UK. However, this type of chemical weedkiller can have a negative effect on our environment and biodiversity by removing plants which are relied upon by birds, insects and other wildlife.

That’s why we’ll be carrying out a year-long glyphosate free trial and testing out alternative methods such as manual removal and/or organic (Pelargonic Acid) and vinegar (Acetic Acid) based weedkiller alternatives such as Katoun Gold and New-Way Weed Spray. This will help us understand the impact of removing glyphosate and explore alternative ways of managing weeds which are not harmful to the community or the environment.

Weeds can be defined as a plant growing in the wrong place, and so we understand this trial will create areas with more weeds. With this in mind, our Grounds Maintenance team will focus on ensuring health and safety issues such as trip hazards or visibility issues are addressed during each visit.

Our in-house Tree team will also stop using glyphosate during this trial, as they currently use the chemical in a more targeted approach to prevent regrowth of any tree or vegetation removal they carry out.

Vicki Tischler, Head of Neighbourhood Services said: “We’re excited to be commencing a year-long trial to manage weeds without the use of glyphosate. This is a positive step forward in the way we manage our land and reflects our commitment in creating safer and healthier green spaces for both our customers and nature.”

Whilst glyphosate is currently licensed for use in the UK until December 2026, it has been banned in a number of countries and its use is likely to be restricted or even banned in the UK over the coming years. Therefore, this project is essential to us all learning to live with weeds – in the right places.
