Safeguarding Adults Week: Prevention in Practice
This week marks the beginning of Safeguarding Adults Week, an opportunity to raise awareness of safeguarding whilst looking at prevention in practice, and highlight how our teams can support you.
This year’s theme is ‘prevention: act before abuse’, encouraging organisations and communities to recognise the signs and intervene before abuse escalates. We’re committed to creating a culture where you feel heard, believed and supported and we’re working in partnership with external organisations to help us do this.
Spotting the signs
This week is Safeguarding Adults Week, and we want to take the opportunity to remind you that safeguarding is everyone’s business. There are some people in our communities that may be at risk of harm without always being able to ask for help, sometimes a neighbour noticing something isn’t quite right can make all the difference,
You don’t need any specialist knowledge to help keep someone safe, its about being aware and trusting your instincts.
Safeguarding concerns can take many forms. You may notice that someone in your community is:
- Withdrawn, anxious or fearful, especially around certain people
- Struggling to manage day-to-day tasks such as keeping their home safe or clean
- Showing signs of physical injury that they can’t explain
- Experiencing financial difficulties, sudden debt, or people asking them for money
- Receiving too many visitors at unusual times, or being influenced by others coming in and out of their home
- Not taking medication, or losing support they normally rely on
- Being shouted at, intimidated or controlled by someone else
These signs don’t always mean someone is being harmed, but if something feels worrying, it’s always better to share your concern.
How can you reach out to us safely?
We would always encourage you to report safeguarding concerns directly to the right safeguarding agencies, for adults this may be adult social care or the police.
You can also get in touch with us by calling 0808 169 9301 or using our lice chat online. Remember if someone is in danger always call 999.
Together we can keep our communities safe
Safeguarding Adults Week is a reminder that we all play a part in looking out for each other. By staying aware and reporting concerns, you could help protect a neighbour and connect them with the support they need.
